Society of the ​1704 Virginia Quit Rents


Eligibility for Membership:
​
An invitation to apply may be extended to persons who are lineally descended from a Virginia ancestor who paid the 1704 Virginia Quit Rents, sheriffs, and constables who collected the Quit Rents, the Governor and Vice-Governor of Virginia, and The Lords Fairfax and Culpeper. Virginia 1704 Membership is open to eligible persons, sixteen years of age or older, who are in support of the Society's Constitution and Bylaws.

Upon receipt of required fees and verification of an application by the current Registrar, a lineally descended applicant of qualifying Virginia ancestor shall be granted full membership status with the privilege of voice, vote, and holding office for the remainder of his or her life notwithstanding any genealogical allegations tendered by persons inside or outside the Society at any time in the past or future.

Fees:

Life membership fee is $225.00. The applicant’s check shall be issued to Society of the 1704 Virginia Quit Rents.

The supplemental application fee is $75.00 The applicant’s check shall be issued to Society of the 1704 Virginia Quit Rents. Your supplemental application helps add to our ancestor list. 

The Registrar/Genealogist 's fee for verifying and all applications and supplementals is $75.00.  The applicant’s check shall be issued to the Registrar/Genealogist.

Tips:

Most Qualifying Ancestors may be found in the book: The Quit Rents of Virginia 1704 compiled by Annie Laurie Wright Smith. This book is available for online viewing by searching the title.

Sheriffs of each of the existing counties of Virginia in 1704 are qualifying ancestors.
County and Record Books of the existing 1704 Virginia Counties, may also provide documentation.
Estates that paid Quit Rents are accepted IF the name of the owner for whom the tax is paid is listed.
Orphans who’s Quit Rents were paid by Guardians qualify as ancestors.
